Sustainability in the MountainsFor an eco-friendly mountain experience

An intact natural environment and landscape form the foundation of our daily work as a provider of snow sports and mountain experiences. For Engadin St. Moritz Mountains, sustainability and ecology are therefore not just buzzwords; they have long held special importance both in our snow sports and mountain experiences division and in our hospitality and dining sectors. Through projects focused on sustainability in mountain tourism, we are committed to the responsible use of natural resources and contribute to sustainable tourism in the Engadin and throughout Switzerland. Learn more about our pioneering projects to date, milestones, ongoing initiatives, and planned sustainability projects.

Snow Sports & Mountain Adventures
We are committed to continuously improving our sustainability efforts. This improvement is an ongoing process that began as early as 1981 with the commissioning of the solar thermal system at Marguns. Since then, Engadin St. Moritz Mountains has implemented various measures.
Nair Pitschen Natural Reservoir
The second natural reservoir, Nair Pitschen, will be built on Corviglia by the end of 2025. To allow you to follow the progress of Engadin St. Moritz Mountains’ largest current project from outside the construction site, this website provides an overview of the construction progress.
Renaturierung der WM Piste von 1974
The legendary 1974 World Ski Championships course on Corviglia, St. Moritz’s local mountain, is being restored to its natural state. A section of what was once a symbol of athletic excellence is now being transformed into a piece of pristine Alpine landscape—grasses, flowers, and Alpine habitats are returning.
Piz Nair Thermosiphons
The thawing permafrost at Piz Nair is causing rock layers to become unstable and resulting in measurable shifts at the mountain station. Engadin St. Moritz Mountains AG is addressing this challenge with an innovative, energy-self-sufficient thermosiphon system. This system preserves the permafrost, thereby safeguarding the mountain station and its surroundings.
Hospitality & Food Service
In 2010, we opened the first net-zero-energy hotel in the Alps at Muottas Muragl. The Romantik Hotel is powered 100 percent by renewable energy. Sustainability is also a top priority in our day-to-day operations at the hotels and restaurants: We use Medicleantec’s micro-dry steam to clean our facilities in a particularly eco-friendly way.
