Our eco-friendly hotels and restaurantsTaking a Sustainable Vacation

At Muottas Muragl, you can enjoy sustainable dining and lodging at the first net-zero-energy hotel in the Alps. The Romantik Hotel is powered 100 percent by renewable energy. Thanks to its optimal slope orientation and abundant sunshine, the solar system at this plus-energy hotel is also the second most efficient in Switzerland: it generates all the electricity needed for the hotel and restaurant. Sustainability is also a top priority in our day-to-day operations at the hotels and restaurants: We use Medicleantec’s micro-dry steam to clean our facilities in an especially eco-friendly way—using only water, with no chemicals or harsh cleaning agents, and ensuring 100% hygiene.

Promoting the Circular Economy Through PET Recycling

The restaurants and bars operated by Engadin St. Moritz Mountains AG primarily use glass bottles for their returnable containers. However, PET beverage bottles also account for a certain proportion, which are collected accordingly and returned to the recycling process. This promotes the circular economy, which makes a further contribution to a sustainable future. In 2025, 2,278 PET beverage bottles were collected, amounting to 63 kilograms—this resulted in savings of approximately 167 kilograms of greenhouse gases and about 45 liters of crude oil. For this achievement, we received an environmental certificate from PET-Recycling Switzerland.

Romantik Hotel Muottas MuraglThe First Plus-Energy Hotel in the Alps

In addition to a construction method that adhered to the principles and specifications of the Minergie label, the “Plusenergie-Hotel” project went one step further: The building was expanded from its original area of 1,700 m² to 2,700 m². Despite a 50% increase in floor area, energy consumption was reduced by 64%, from 436,600 kWh/a to 157,400 kWh/a.

56 m² of tubular collectors installed in the window panes of the ground floor provide the energy needed for hot water at the Romantik Hotel Muottas Muragl. Sixteen geothermal probes with an average length of 200 meters—totaling 3,200 meters—supply the entire building with geothermal energy. In addition, Switzerland’s most efficient photovoltaic system, stretching 228 meters along the railroad right-of-way, generates the required electrical energy. If excess solar energy is available, it is stored in the ground via the geothermal probes. This allows the geothermal storage mass to regenerate. Waste heat from cooling systems, heat recovery from exhaust air, and heat recovery from the machine room are further complementary measures that ensure the new building operates in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. Incidentally, on an annual basis, the mountain actually produces more energy than the building requires.

Eco-Friendly Cleaning with Micro-Dry Steam

Thanks to the Medicleantec Micro Cleaner, we clean in a particularly eco-friendly way at the Romantik Hotel Muottas Muragl—using only water, with no chemicals or harsh cleaning agents, and ensuring 100% hygiene.

How does it work? With Medicleantec’s micro-dry steam: The Micro Cleaner is a high-performance heat cleaning device that uses very dry micro-steam (only 5–8% water content) to achieve residue-free, hygienic cleanliness on all surfaces and materials.
